Norwood 2015 Fall Season

Nov 26 Thursday Schedule

Thanksgiving Day

Varsity Football defeated host Dedham 22-7 to finish the season with a 4-7 record.  Dedham jumped up to an early 7-0 lead on an 8-yard TD pass from Liam Madden to Jack Powers.  Norwood tied the score 7-7 on a 24-yard slant to Sean Mellen from Joe Leanos just before the end of the 1st quarter.  Jay Wladkowski nailed the extra point.  Norwood took the lead for good on a Leanos to Zac Pungitore 25-yard TD pass with 4 minutes to go in the half.  Norwood faked the extra point with Joe Mazzotta scoring to make it 15-7.  Just before the half ended Leanos found Senior Jake Vail for a 17-yard TD pass with Wladkowski adding the extra point.  The teams played tough defense in the 2nd half as Norwood won 22-7.

Norwood JV Football Finishes Undefeated

The Norwood JV Football team completed an undefeated season with a hard fought victory over rival Dedham by a score of 12-8.  It was the first game in which they were scored upon before the 4th Quarter! They ended the season with a 8-0-3 record!  This is quite an accomplishment and a testament to the hard work and dedication of the players, Coach Arbogast and the coaching staff.

A lot of the JV’s will be starters on next year’s Varsity.  The outstanding defense was led by juniors Liam Rigby, DeVaughn Carter, Mike King, Kyle Condon, and Coleman Ivory. Ivory returned two interceptions for TD’s.  Sylvan Appolon was the smallest member of the defensive line but played the biggest.  He led the team in sacks,  well into double digits.

The offense was led by Sophomore QB Colin Plasko who threw multiple TDs to King, Condon and sophomore Paul Murphy.  Sophomores Plasko, Murphy, Matt Rice, Sammy Mamoudi and Max Pfingston, to name a few, have opportunities to make a significant impact to the varsity in 2016.

Nov 14 Saturday Results

Varsity Football lost to Bishop Feehan 21-12 on Senior Day at Norwood HS.  Norwood fell behind 21-0 and just could not get back into the game.  From this perspective, Norwood tried to fight their way back into the contest but overall it was not their best effort of the year.  Feehan scored their first TD on a methodical drive that shredded the Norwood defense.  After a quick Norwood series, Feehan again marched down field but this time the Norwood’s defense put up a solid goal line stand forcing Feehan to go for a field goal.  A bad snap on the FG attempt seemed to indicate the Mustang’s luck was changing but a resourceful response by the holder turned the play into a TD as he found a wide open player in the corner of the end zone.  Instead of Norwood’s ball at their own 15 and a 7-0 deficit, it was 14-0.  Norwood’s misfortune continued as they mishandled the ensuing kickoff giving Feehan 1st down at the Norwood 25 yd line.  Feehan quickly made the score 21-0 with about 4 minutes left in the half.  Norwood’s offense finally got going and scored to make the score 21-6 at the half.  It was a well balanced, well executed drive typical of this year’s offense.  The extra point was blocked.

In the 2nd half, Norwood marched down field late in the 3rd quarter to score and make it 21-12 but the attempted 2-pt conversion was unsuccessful.    Neither team was able to score the rest of the way.  It was disappointing final home game for 2015.  Norwood will face Dedham, who won their 1st game Friday night, on Thanksgiving at 10:00 a.m. in Dedham.

Norwood’s record stands at a disappointing 3-7 but from a football program perspective, it has been a very good year.  The quality of play, the effort and improvement of the players, and the ability of the coaching staff to put players in position to succeed and win  has been outstanding despite the record.   With just a little luck from the football gods, Norwood’s record could easily be 7-3.  There were 2 last minute losses to Natick and Holliston.  In both cases, Norwood drove the field to take the lead late.  In the Walpole game, after Norwood scored to tie the score 14-14 late in the 3rd quarter and clearly have the momentum, an onside kick that Norwood appeared to recover deep in Walpole territory was given to Walpole.  In the MIAA Tournament game against #1 seed Milton, Norwood was losing 12-10 at the half despite an horrendous call by the officials on muffed punt by Milton deep in Milton territory.  The ‘do over’ (yes ‘do over’, I can’t make this up)  of the punt results in a Milton TD.  A major accomplishment for the 2015 team was qualifying for the MIAA Tournament for the first time since the new format was implemented.  On top of the culture change at the Varsity level, the Freshman and JV teams have had solid years.  Norwood football is heading the right direction.

The keys to continuing the upward trend?  This is all subjective…  Keeping the current coaching staff in tact, a continued commitment from the players to improve during the off season and, the key to getting to the top, better participation from the student body.  Feel safe in saying ‘check’ and ‘check’ for the first 2 items.  More players is not a slight to the current team because they left everything they had on the field but the lack of depth was a factor in the late game losses.  Just 4-5 more kids per class would make a difference.  Again, just my opinion.

Nov 6 Friday Results

Varsity Football lost at Hopkinton 16-13.  With Norwood leading 13-10 after a 37 yd field goal from freshman Jay Wladkowski with under 3 minutes to play, Hopkinton score with 30 seconds remaining in the game to take 16-13 lead.   Norwood had one final try to tie up the game after a successful hook-and-ladder play from senior QB Joe Leanos to senior Sean Mellen to sophomore Tony Ortega set up a last second FG attempt but the kick was blocked.

Oct 30 Friday Results

Norwood lost to #1 seed Milton in the MIAA Football South Division 3 SouthWest playoffs, 38-17.   It was a close game through 3 quarters before Milton broke the game open.  The first key play of the game and ‘the’ key play of the game occurred late in the 1st quarter when Norwood punted to Milton.  Norwood punter (and QB) Senior Joe Leanos boomed a long high kick in the which the Milton player signaled for a fair catch.  The ball was fumbled and Norwood recovered deep in Milton territory.  However, the official farthest from the play whistled the play completed just as the Milton player was fielding the punt.  After a brief discussion, the officials ruled a ‘do over’.  Norwood had to re-kick.  This time Milton called an all-out rush and blocked the kick.  Milton picked up the blocked kick and returned it for a TD.  Norwood stopped the extra point attempt but Milton lead 6-0.  Norwood got the ball and began to drive through middle field with effective running by Joe Mazzotta and Mike Flynn. Milton intercepted a pass in their territory and returned it inside the Norwood 20 where Norwood forced the intercepter to fumble with Norwood recovering.  The 1st quarter ended with Milton leading 6-0 and their offense was on the field for 1 play, the extra point attempt.  Except for the score, Norwood was controlling play.

The Milton offense did get going midway through the 2nd quarter.  The Milton receiver took QB Chris Fallon’s quick pass behind the line of scrimmage and after a key block, took the ball down the sideline for a 60 yard TD.  Making the score 12-0.  Norwood again stopped the extra points.  With only a few minutes left in the half, Norwood took the kickoff at midfield, and marched downfield to score on a Leanos pass to Sean Mellon with :51 seconds remaining in the half.  Freshman Jay Wladkowski added the extra point to make score 12-7.  Milton took the ensuing kickoff but fumbled at midfield on the 1st play from scrimmage with Norwood recovering.  Norwood drove downfield and with 5 seconds to go in the half Wladkowski drilled a 37 yard field to make score Milton 12 Norwood 10 at the half.

In the second half the Milton offense got going.  Half way through the 3rd quarter Milton scored to make it 18-10 with Norwood again stopping the extra points.  A Norwood turnover deep in their territory set up Milton’s next score.  With score 32-10 half way through the 4th quarter Leanos found Senior Conor Riggle in the end zone to make it 32-17.  Milton tacked on another score to make the final 38-17.

Oct 24 Saturday Results

Varsity Football lost to Natick 21-17. A win would have guaranteed Norwood a spot in the MIAA football playoffs but once the standings were re-calculated the Mustangs still made it.  Norwood, the #8 seed in the South SW section, will have a re-match with #1 seed Milton next weekend.  Norwood lost to Milton 3 weeks ago 26-14.

Whether Norwood makes the playoffs or not, their game against Natick goes down as an instant classic!  Natick led 14-0 at the half and outplayed Norwood by a wide margin.  Norwood could not move the ball.  Everything changed in the 2nd half.  Norwood received the ball to start the 2nd half and methodically moved down the field and scored on a 28 yard run by Senior Joe Mazzotta who dragged Natick defenders along until he could reach out across the goal line.  Freshman Jay Wladkowski drilled the extra point.  Norwood got the ball back on a turnover and quickly marched down field and on the 1st play of the 4th quarter Senior Joe Leanos found classmate Zac Pungitore in the end from 28 yards.  Wladkowski delivered a pressure kick to tie the game at 14-14.   Norwood produced another turnover on Natick’s next position.  This time Norwood put together a deliberate and consistent drive eating up the clock.  With under 3 minutes to go and 4th down on the Natick 14, Coach Jim Tighe sent Wladkowski on the field for the win.  From 31 yards out on a great hold by Mike Flynn, the freshman delivered putting Norwood up 17-14.  Unfortunately, the game did not end this way.  Natick received the ensuing kickoff  and after 3 plays had 4th and 15 thanks to a determined effort by Senior defensive linemen Steve Lussier and Keith Stokes.  On a pass that seemed to hang in the air, Natick completed the a pass to keep the drive going.  With under 1 minute Natick turned to their 240 lb Sophomore running back Mallik Williams. Williams took the ball although way down to the Norwood half yard line.  He appeared to be stopped in the backfield but with 9 seconds remaining he powered his way just over the goal line for a dramatic 21-17 Natick win.

If justice prevails, Norwood will be in the playoffs.  They have been in every game and lost to the top teams in their MIAA sections.  They get better each week and would be a hand-full for whoever plays them.  The players and coaches deserve that opportunity.  Let’s hope it comes true.  We will know for sure on Sunday.

Oct 9 Friday Results

Varsity Football lost to undefeated Milton 26-14 in the only home night game of the year for the Mustangs.  After a tough loss to Walpole and knowing Milton had beaten Walpole 28-7, the Mustangs knew they would have their hands full.  After a back-and-forth 1st quarter Milton scored behind star QB Matt Fallon.  Fallon and Milton continued scoring in the 2nd quarter building 26-0 lead shortly before half time.  With less than 30 seconds to go before the half, Norwood from their side of the 50 ran the hook-and-ladder play.  Joe Leanos hit Sean Mellen on a 5 yard turn-in and right before being tackled he pitched the ball back to Joe Mazzotta coming out of the backfield.  Mazzotta ran the ball down the left sideline before being pushed out-of-bounds inside the Milton 20.  Norwood ran a couple of play coming up short.  On the final play of the half, Leanos dropped back to pass and was driven out-of-the-pocket to his right.  With no one open he took off for the endzone and was not going to be denied as he scored from 10 yards out.  Freshman kicker Jay Wladkowski split the uprights on the extra point to make it 26-7 and give Norwood momentum heading into the 2nd half.  Both defenses tightened up in the 2nd half  with Norwood stopping Milton several times inside their 10 yard line.  With under 4 minutes to go, Leanos hit Sean Mellen in stride about 30 yards downfield.  Norwood had a 1st down inside the Milton 30.  Several plays later Leanos hit Pungitore from about 5 yards out.  Wladkowski added the extra point to make the score 26-14.  Norwood recovered the onside kick but could not mount a drive and Milton ran out the clock to end it.

With the score 26-0 right before the half it did not look good for the Musangs, Milton’s offense was rolling and their defense was quick not letting the Norwood offense get any kind of rhythm.  Norwood’s effort was there but the answers to Milton were not. But the score right before the half gave Norwood a little reward for their work.  Except for about 6 minutes in the 2nd quarter Norwood battled Milton even the rest of the game.  Norwood has lost the last 2 games after winning their 1st three.  Although they have lost the last 2 weeks, Norwood knows they can play with and beat both Walpole and Milton. The way the playoff system is set up, there is a good possibility they could play either or both of these teams again.

Sep 19 Saturday Results

In the home opener, Norwood HS Varsity Football improved to 2-0 with a 20-7 victory over a tough Wayland team.  Norwood scored first on a perfectly thrown 20 yard pass from QB Joe Leanos to Zack Pungitore in the righthand corner of the end zone.  The TD was set up on a spectacular catch by Pungitore where he reached back to make a catch on a crossing route. While landing on his back and the defenders arms rap around him, Pungitore managed to hold onto the ball  against the defender’s back.  Wayland took the ensuing kickoff and marched down field on methodical drive.  After a dropped pass in the end zone, Adley Eugene intercepted a pass on the goal line and returned it to the Norwood 30 yd line.   Norwood proceeded to drive down the field for their 2nd score..  From the Wayland 36 yd line Leanos under pressure and going down to the ground managed to find Sean Mellen in the middle of the field at the 25. Mellen shook off a would-be tackler and headed out to the left sideline where turned up field, fellow receiver Zack Pungitore de-cleated a Wayland DB with a vicious block that enable Mellen to score.  Norwood went for 2 points having missed the extra point on their 1st score.  Receiver Mellen split to the right went in motion behind QB Leanos who  pitched to Mellen, moving to the left Mellen stopped and threw back across the field to a wide open Joe Mazzotta.

With Norwood leading 14-0, Wayland took the 2nd half kickoff and drove 80 yards scoring with a little over a minute left in the 3rd quarter.  With score of 14-7 Norwood and Wayland traded possessions.  With a little over 4 minutes remaining Wayland punted from their side of the 50 yd line and downed the ball on the Norwood 2 yd line.  Momentum was on Wayland’s side but Norwood changed that on 2 plays.  The 1st play was a quicker hitting run play over the left side for 6 yards by Joe Mazzotta.  Norwood ran the same quick hitter to Mazzotta over the right-side of the line.  This time the line created a huge hole with Mazzotta going 64 yds down to the Wayland 28 yd line.  With a little over 2 minutes remaining Wayland stopped Norwood and took over on their 35 yard line.  On the 1st play, Zack Pungitore picked off a deep pass down the right sideline.  Returning the ball up the sideline Pungitore cut across the field at the 25 and picked up a devastating block thrown by Joe Mazzotta on a would be Wayland tackler that enabled him to take it to the house. Final score was 20 – 7.  Norwood earned a well-deserved win and now take on Dedham at home next Saturday.

Great news…  The Town of Norwood announced that they will be doing a lot of work on the Balch fields during the Fall. First task will be edging,  sod install, supplement the infield material, rebuild the mound and batters box, drainage work etc. This will occur during September.

Starting at the end of September and through October, new ball field lights and fixtures will be installed. The work will be completed by November… The lights will be ready for use in the Spring of 2016!

With August well under way, kids are either resting a little or in a lot of cases, getting ready for a Fall sport.  Pop Warner has taken over the Coakley Middle School fields as they begin preparation for their 52nd season.  The Norwood High School football team is well into their Summer conditioning program.  Driving around town you can see the other teams working hard preparing for their respective sport: soccer , cross country, field hockey and Girls volleyball, and,  of course, the golfers are doing what they do.
