In bottom of the 5th, Kevin Hines singled with 2-outs, his 3rd hit of the night. Sophomore Michael James ran for Hines and went from 1st to 3rd on an infield hit by Paul Galvin.  Sophomore Connor Flynn lined a clutch single to left to tie the game.  Junior Cam Ryan’s 3rd hit of the night, a sharp single to right center, scored Galvin with the eventual game winner.  The Chelmsford leadoff hitter opened the 6th with a double to right.  The next batter drop down a bunt, Mellen fired to 3rd to get the lead runner.  The runner was initially safe but senior 3rd baseman Mike Flaherty kept the tag on the runner as he overslid 3rd for the 1st out of the inning.  Mellen ended the inning with a called 3rd strike.  Norwood left 2 on in the bottom of the 6th with pinch hitter Danny Sullivan lashing a line drive of the pitcher for another Norwood hit.  In the 7th, Chelmsford got a runner on with one out but Mellen fanned the Chelmsford 4th and 5th hitters to end the game.  (Source: Twitter – @Stangs2015 and @Tom_Fargo)

Norwood defends South Division 1 Title

Instant Classic!  Norwood won a tension-filled game over #1 seed Mansfield 9-3 to win the South Division 1 title for the second consecutive year.  How can a 9-3 game be an ‘instant classic’ and ‘tensioned-filled’?  Let’s recap. Mansfield Evan Kershaw was lights out the first 2 innings but Norwood got to him in the 3rd.  With 1-out Connor Flynn doubled down the left field line, Senior Brian Dittmeier walked and Leadoff hitter Declan O’Brien blooped a single to left to load the bases.  Jake O’Rourke punched a hard ground ball through a drawn in infield to make it 1-0 Norwood.  Kevin Hines followed and grounded to the Mansfield 3rd baseman who gets the force out at home but the catcher’s throw to first for a double play glances off Hines allowing D. O’Brien to score.  Norwood 2-0 heading to the bottom of the 3rd inning.  Norwood starter Sean Mellen had good stuff but control was an issue.  He went deep into the count on most batters and could not get ahead in the count.  Still he fought.  With bases loaded and 1-out in the bottom of the 4th, Mellen struck out the last 2 batters to end the inning and keep the score 2-0.

Centerfielder Brian Dittmeier led off the top half of the 5th inning with a long triple over the right fielder’s head and scored on a pass ball. With 2-outs Kevin Hines walked.  Pinch runner Richie Whelan scored from first on a hit-and-run single to right center by Paul Galvin.  Norwood led 4-0 after 4 1/2 innings.  In bottom half of the 5th, Mansfield finally got to Mellen with a walk and a bloop single that put runners on 1st and 3rd, no outs.  Brian King relieved and gave up a walk and HBP to make the score 4-1. After a strike out, Mansfield made it 4-2 on a sacrifice fly to right field. King struck out the next batter to end the 5th, Norwood leading 4-2. After a quite top of the 6th, Mansfield was back at it in the bottom half.  Mansfield loaded the bases with no outs.  Paul Galvin relieved and promptly gave up a soft line drive single between 1st and 2nd to make it 4-3.  On a 3-2 count to the next batter, Galvin gets a called 3rd strike on a perfect low and outside fastball. With 1-out the next Mansfield batter hits a screaming ground ball up the middle but Norwood Senior shortstop Mike Flaherty cuts if off, steps on 2nd and fires to Scotty O’Brien at first for an inning ending Double Play.

In the top of the 7th, the first 2 Mustangs batters were quickly struck out.  Third batter Senior Kevin Hines fouled off several 2 strike pitches before delivering a hard grounder into right field and proceeded to steal 2nd base.  Paul Galvin battled with 2 strikes and hit a bounder up the middle over 2nd base and between the Mansfield shortstop and 2nd baseman to score Hines with a critical insurance run.  Denis Drummey followed with a similar at-bat.  After fouling off several pitches, Drummey grounds one, again, up the middle just eluding Mansfield’s middle infield to score Galvin with the 6th run.  Norwood was still not done.  Senior Scotty O’Brien worked a walk before Mike Flaherty hit a grounder by the first baseman for run number 7.  Connor Flynn hit a fly ball to center that was misplayed and 2 more runs scored.  The inning ended with the bases loaded, Norwood leading 9-3.  In the bottom of the 7th, the Mansfield leadoff hitter singled but Galvin retired the side to end it.

This was a great win for the Norwood team – players and coaches.  Sean Mellen struggled but battled all night long showing tremendous grit in giving his team a shot.  Brian King likewise came into a bases loaded situation in the bottom of the 5th and battled to maintain the lead.  And then, Paul Galvin inherited a bases loaded no outs situation in the 6th and willed his way out of the inning with the help of Mike Flaherty’s slick double play.  With 2-outs and no one on in the top of the 7th and the outcome not decided, the 3 at-bats by Kevin Hines, Paul Galvin and Denis Drummey that produced the first 2 runs of the inning were just classic pitcher-batter battles where Norwood’s grit and will won out, plain and simple.  In the end, it was Norwood’s South Division 1 title on the line and they were not going back to Norwood without it!

Norwood (South Champions) will now play the North Division 1 winner in the State Division 1 semifinal playoff game early next week. The North champion will be the winner of the  Chelmsford vs Lawrence game scheduled for tomorrow night 7 p.m. at LeLacheur Park (Lowell). The Norwood vs Chelmsford-Lawrence semifinal game will be played early next week at LeLacheur Park (Lowell).  The winner will play the Central vs West semifinal next Saturday June 20th at Holy Cross, time – TBD.

O’Brien saved a run in the 3rd on a diving catch in deep right field to end the inning.  In the 4th, Johnny Ryan beat out an infield single and after advancing to 2nd on a wild pitch, scored on a throwing error by the SL 3rd baseman on a slow roller by Brian Dittmeier.  In the Silver Lake half of the 4th, they had 2 runners on via walks but catcher Kevin Hines picked the runner off 2nd to end the inning.  Silver Lake  scored their run in the 6th on a walk and double to the right field gap. The very next batter hit a line drive to 1st baseman Cam Ryan who knocked it down and made a perfect feed to an alert Mellen covering 1st to end the inning.  In last inning Silver Lake got a runner to 3rd with 2 outs but Mellen ended their tournament by striking out the last batter.  (Source: Twitter – @Stangs2015 and @Tom_Fargo and @JakeLevin477)
