Norwood 2016 Spring Season

June 4 Saturday Schedule

Norwood Varsity Softball lost at King Philip 5-0 to end their season. This concluded a great season by a young team that won the Herget Division title in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year.

June 2 Thursday Schedule

Norwood Varsity Baseball (5th seed) lost to Attleboro (12) 1-0 in 9 innings. Norwood Senior Sean Mellen went 8 1/3 innings allowing 1 unearned run. Brian King closed out the 9th for Norwood. Attleboro’s scored on a hit and throwing error, wild pitch and a fielder’s choice in which Mellen almost cut down the run at the plate on an outstanding play. Norwood offense was held in check with the only threat occurring in the 5th when Michael James singled to right, stole 2nd, move to 3rd on a pass ball with 2 outs but was left stranded.

May 31 Tuesday Schedule

MIAA tournament pairings announced:

Norwood Varsity Baseball (5th seed) to play Attleboro (12) – Thursday, June 2nd at 4:00 pm at Balch Field. Silver Lake is number 1 seed. Thursday’s winner will play the winner of the Taunton (4) vs Brookline (13) game – time and place to be determined.

Norwood Boys Varsity Baseball defeated Walpole 2-0. For Norwood, Brian King pitched a complete game and drove in the 2nd run on an infield single. Senior Pat Harkins, getting his first varsity start at catcher, had 2 singles and drove in the 1st Norwood run. Pat had been injured early in the season. Unfortunately, Dedham’s 1-0 win over Milton gave Dedham their 1st Bay State League baseball championship in 48 years. This coming on the announcement that Dedham will be moving to the Tri-Valley Conference.

May 23 Monday Schedule

Norwood Boys Varsity Baseball lost to Newton North 6-0. Kyle Begley pitched outstanding in relef of Sean Mellon allowing only 1 run over the last 4 innings. Norwood’s bats continued a season long slump. Pitching and fielding have been outstanding all year but it is tough to pitch when you go into a game feeling you have to toss a shutout.

May 18 Wednesday Schedule

Norwood Boys Varsity Baseball won at Natick by a score of 5-0. Senior Kyle Begley making his 1st varsity start pitched a complete game allowing only 4 hits, walking 1 and striking out 3. Unsung Begley was the player who step up at the beginning of the season when Norwood was in dire need of catching. He filled in while several players were on the DL. Norwood Boys Varsity Baseball beat Dedham 2-0 at Balch School behind Sean Mellen’s No Hitter. Mellen’s pitching record is 5-0 allowing 6 hits in 35 innings! Norwood got their 2-runs in the bottom of the 1st and held on. Norwood is 8-3 heading into 2 away games – at Needham and at Milton.

Norwood Boys Varsity Baseball edged Framingham 1-0 behind a 2-hit shutout by Brian King. After a shaky 1st inning he was in total command the last 6 inning. With the bases loaded and 1 out in the first, King got a slick 4-6-3 double-play, Connor Flynn to Paul Galvin to Sam Cutler. Norwood’s only run was scored in the 4th with Mike Flynn belting a long double to center to deliver the winning run.

April 27 Wednesday Schedule

Norwood Boys Varsity Baseball defeated Natick , 2-1, on a walk-off base loaded single by senior catcher Mike Flynn in the bottom of the 7th. Sean Mellon lead off the inning with walk and beat the throw to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Mike Keady. Declan O’Brien put down another sacrifice bunt to move Mellon and Keady to 2nd and 3rd. Paul Galvin was intentionally walk before Flynn line a single through the drown in infield.

Paul Galvin went the distance on the mound and delivered the tying run in the 5th on an RBI single to right field that scored Michael James. Natick had scored early on a single and an extra base. Third baseman Danny Sullivan made several defensive gems at third to help keep Natick off base. Right Fielder Declan O’Brien threw out a runner at 2nd trying to stretch a single into a double.

Norwood Boys Varsity Baseball defeated Xaverian Brothers 1-0 in the Bay State League-Catholic League Challenge held at Catholic Memorial HS. Norwood was again led by Senior lefty Sean Mellon. Mike James scored the only run on a hit by Chris Petracca. In the other ‘challenge games, Braintree defeated BC High 3-2, CM beat Newton North 4-1 and St John’s Prep beat Walpole 3-1.
