2015 Summer Season

Aug 8 Saturday results

The season for Norwood’s 12 year old ‘Boys of Summer’ is over.  As they have done all Summer, they battled to the end but this time they ran out of gas against a tough Wellesley team.  The final score of the Summer Youth Baseball League semifinal game was 8-6.  Jason Denehy and Tarun Ramani shared pitching duties while Bryce Kiley, Sean French and Denehy hit home runs in a losing cause.  This game ended a great season. Manager Dan Denehy and Coaches Dan French and Jim Wladkowski did an outstanding job with this talented group of baseball players.  They taught the kids how to play the game the right way and then let them play.  The team always  hustled on and off the field, and showed a genuine enthusiasm for playing the game and for being with each other. The Summer of 2015 was a memorable baseball season for everyone – players, coaches, families, friends and fans!  Thanks!

Norwood 12 year olds defeated Westwood, 9-1, in a Summer Youth Baseball League quarterfinal playoff game at Kelley Field, Norwood.  Last night against it was pitching, defense combined with gritty at-bats and clutch hitting.  Tonight it was the long ball starting with a Jason Denehy home run on the first pitch of the game.  Robbie Wladkowski, Sean French and Bryce Kiley also went deep.   Bryce Kiley went the first 4 innings with James Whelan and Robbie Wladkowski pitching the final 2 innings.  Norwood advances to the semifinals to play a tough Wellesley team Saturday, August 8 at 4:30 in Westwood.

Norwood Senior Babe Ruth League defeated Wollaston to win South Shore League championship.  Last night Norwood  beat Wollaston 12-0 on a no-hitter by Brian Dittmeier.  Tonight Cam Davis and Matt Hajjar combined to pitch Norwood to a 5-4 victory and a 2-0 sweep in the best-of-3 finals, and improbable  title.

On July 22nd Norwood had been eliminated by Dedham from the playoffs.  Sunday night Aug 2nd manager Steve Cline gets the call that his team has a playoff game on Tuesday Aug 4th against Milton with the winner starting a best-of-3 series Wednesday against Wollaston at Adams Field Quincy.  Less than 5 days later your team is the 2015 South Shore Senior Babe Ruth League Champions!  Continue reading…

The Norwood Senior Babe Ruth league team is alive, again, in the South Shore League playoffs and on the verge of winning the championship!  In a bizarre turn of events, Dedham who had defeated both Norwood and Milton in preliminary series, was up 1-0 in the 2-of-3 finals series with Wollaston when Wollaston raised concerns with a Dedham player added to the Dedham roster during the season.  After receiving a rule clarification concerning a player’s playoff eligibility, Dedham admitted the error and withdrew from the playoffs on Sunday.  The player in question was not just any player but the winning pitcher in both series clinchers against Norwood and Milton. (Read Tom Fargo’s story for details.)

Instead of awarding the championship to Wollaston, South Shore Senior Babe Ruth League President Buddy Lane wanted the championship to be settled on the field. So, Norwood played and defeated Milton 4-0 Tuesday night in a 1 game playoff to see who would play Wollaston in the 2-of-3 finals.  Wednesday night Norwood took 1-0 series lead when they defeated Wollaston 12-0 with the pitching throwing a no hitter.

Aug 5 Wednesday results

July 24 Friday schedule

Norwood Little League 12 year olds All Stars sectional pool Finals.

Norwood lost to Newton SouthEast by a score of 4-2.  Newton now advances to the Mass championship pool play starting next Wednesday in Lynn.  Jason Denehy and his Newton counterpart, (a young King Felix with wind-up and all),  hooked up in a classic pitchers’ duel at Crawford field Canton.  Norwood jumped out to 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st on some aggressive base running by Jason Denehy who led off the game with an infield single.  Newton collected all their runs in the bottom of the 2nd on some fortunate hops and ‘just misses’ on Norwood’s part.  Norwood scored their 2nd run in the 5th when pinch runner Danny Cotter scored on a clutch single by James DeMarias.  Norwood battled all night and were able to reach the 85 pitch limit to get Newton’s ace out of the game at the end of the 5th.  In the top of the 6th, Norwood hit some hard balls but Newton made the plays.  It just was not Norwood’s night.  It was a great post season run by Norwood.

Norwood Legion Post 70 lost to Walpole 7-4 to end their season.  Norwood held a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the 6th when Walpole scored 4 runs.  Although the ultimate goal was not reached, Post 70 had a very successful season.  They began the District 6 Legion season less than 24 hours after a majority of the team had just won the Massachusetts Division I State Championship …and, played their 1st 12 games in 12 days …and, after 2 days off around July 4th played their remaining 9 games in 10 days!  This was a major league schedule.  It is a credit to the team and coaches that they were able to make the playoffs!  Link to Tournament brackets.

Norwood Babe Ruth 14 year olds lost to Marblehead 5-3 in the EMass Babe Ruth semifinals held at Adams Field Quincy.  It was the 14’s 2nd game of the day having defeated Quincy in a must win game earlier in the day.  It was also their 4th game in 2 days in 90+ degree heat (… and no, it was not a dry heat).  The team battled but a rested Marblehead team had their ace pitcher ‘rested and ready’ and he proved to be too much.  Joey Ryan and Kevin Costello were outstanding considering Joey pitched 5 innings on Sunday, while Kevin pitched an inning on Sunday and 4 innings earlier in the day.  Jay Wladkowski caught all 28 innings and had several multiple hit games in addition to nailing several would-be stealers in eliminating any running game teams might have had in mind.  Tim Denehy, Joey Collins, Marc Murphy, Colin Ridge, Matt Jeannetti and Sean Mason contributed solid defensive plays.  Other members of the team who contributed throughout district and state play were: Declan Tolman, Craig Riley, Finn Kelley, Andrew Cobuccio, Danny Quinn and Sam Wong.  Joe Jacobs managed the team and was assisted by Charlie Doyle, Vin Lembo and George Hawley.

July 13 Monday results

Norwood Post 70 (10-10) defeated Norfolk  6-0 at Balch Field.  Cam Ryan took a no-hitter through 6 and 2/3’s before surrendering a hit.  Cam with a 1 hit, complete game shutout, his 2nd such game of the summer.  Norwood is in a must win game tonight vs. Norfolk down the Balch again.  Norwood would lose tie breaker even if Medfield also loses.  Tie breaker goes to head to head record if 2 teams tie and cumulative wins amongst the tied teams if 3+.  So Needham has 4 wins (beat Norwood 3 and Medfield 1), Medfield with 3 wins (beat Needham 2 and Norwood 1), and Norwood would only have the 2 wins against Medfield.  (Source:  Twitter – @Pudgehc)

With the Babe Ruth District 5 14 and 15 year old Championships scheduled, only the 15 year olds were able to play.  Norwood lost a tough game to a spirited Dedham team, 5-1.  Dedham jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first and added single runs in the 5th and 7th inning to hold a 5-0 lead going into Norwood’s last at-bat.  Needless to say the Dedham pitcher was outstanding keeping Norwood off balance all night.  The defense was flawless.  Norwood best chance came in the 3rd when with 2-outs and bases loaded Ryan Johnson drove a ball to deep right center that was hauled in by the right fielder going away. If it drops, it was a tie-game.  Norwood threatened and scored in the 7th on a Pat Forrest single to center but a slick 4-6-3  double-play by Dedham shortened the rally.  Dedham advances to the EMass 15 year old tournament in Plymouth as District 5 Champs.
